All responsibility for errors and omissions lies, however, with the authors. Abstract The New Keynesian Phillips Curve (NKPC) model of inflation dynamics based on forward-looking expectations is of great theoretical significance in monetary policy analysis. dominate the dynamics of the short-run aggregate supply curve. This paper examines this inconsistency by investigating multiple structural changes in the NKPC for the US over 1968-2005. Both inflation expectations survey data and a rational expectations approximation are used to capture expectations. We find that forward-looking behavior plays a smaller role during the high and volatile inflation regime to 1981 than in the subsequent period of moderate inflation, providing support for the empirical coherence of sticky prices models over the last two decades. A further break in the intercept of the NKPC is identified around 2001 and this may be associated with monetary policy in the recent period. 3 " The theories usually stop short, however, of specifying models of aggregate supply that are intended to hold generally " .

Sticky information and model uncertainty in survey data on inflation expectations

This paper compares three reduced-form models of heterogeneity in survey inflation expectations. On the one hand, we specify two models of forecasting inflation based on limited information flows of the type developed in Mankiw and Reis [2002. Sticky information versus sticky prices: a proposal to replace the new Keynesian Phillips curve. Quarterly Journal of Economics 117(4), 1295–1328]. We pr...

Welfare-Based Optimal Monetary Policy with Unemployment and Sticky Prices: A Linear-Quadratic Framework

The steep increases in unemployment associated with the financial crisis and global recession of 2008–2009, and the widespread focus on unemployment in both the popular press and in policy debates, is in sharp contrast to the canonical new Keynesian model in which unemployment is noticeably absent. In that model, workers are never unemployed, and only hours worked per worker vary over the busin...

Can Rational Expectations Sticky-Price Models Explain Inflation Dynamics?

The canonical inflation specification in sticky-price rational expectations models (the new-Keynesian Phillips curve) is often criticized on the grounds that it fails to account for the dependence of inflation on its own lags. In response, many recent studies have employed a “hybrid” sticky-price specification in which inflation depends on a weighted average of lagged and expected future values...

Threshold Effects in Sticky Information Philips Curve: Evidence from Iran

During the last decade, several studies have argued that sticky information model proposed by Mankiw and Reis (2002), in which firms update their information occasionally rather than instantaneously, explains some stylized facts about the inflation dynamics. Sticky information pricing model successfully captures the sluggish movement of aggregate prices in response to monetary policy shocks. De...
